One Decision That Changes Everything

I’ve always been a baseball fan. My dad was a Little League coach so I spent a a couple of years as a bat boy before I was old enough to play. Later, I got my chance. I had the uniform, glove, shoes, and stash of bubble gum. I had everything I needed, so I thought. But I was missing one thing. Like every other six-year-old, when it came to how to play baseball, I didn’t have a clue. In those days, Little League baseball looked like today’s soccer field—there was one ball and a bevy of kids all racing after it as if it were the prize egg at an Easter egg hunt. The ball would stop rolling, a pileup would ensue, and one lucky kid would emerge from the pile holding the ball. Meanwhile, another frantic six-year old was learning that the bases must be run in a specific order. One coach was trying to get the runner to move while the other coach tried to sort out the pile of kids scrambling for the ball. We called it a game, but it was chaos in uniform. Later I made the decision to coach my own boys in little league baseball. It was just as chaotic as it was when I was a kid!

Fast forward a number of years and that situation gets repeated by many adults who spend years of their lives imagining what it would be like to pursue their dreams rather than make an employer’s dreams come true. Like the bat boy, they have a uniform and a job to do. And, like the six-year-olds, they quickly discover that they don’t know what to do. They come to a point where they must make a decision—do they keep doing what they’ve been doing or rethink their futures?

Back to my baseball career… I eventually learned how to play the game and even made the all star team a few times. The transformation was due to the dedication of several coaches who took the time to correct my mistakes and offer tips for how to be better at the game. Without those coaches, I would have given up on playing baseball.

It’s Decision Time

Let’s face it, life hasn’t turned out the way we imagined it. Some people are surprised they are still alive; others are still breathing but show no signs of life. People who achieve their goals usually have several things in common. One is their decision to utilize the services of a coach.

Three Reasons You Need a Coach

You don’t know everything…yet. Granted, there are a lot of people who know a lot of stuff, but even the most successful entrepreneurs employ the services of a coach to help them grow professionally, personally, and strategically. I know a lot of very successful business leaders and they all have one or more people who coach them in various areas of their lives and businesses. If you already know everything you need to know in order to move forward, why are you stuck where you are?

You have trouble seeing things from a different perspective . No matter how hard you try, you can’t accurately see things from a perspective that isn’t yours. I look in the mirror and see the same person who graduated from high school forty years ago. There’s nothing wrong with the mirror, but there is something wrong with my perception of myself. That truth became crystal clear a few weeks ago when I went to get my hair cut and the stylist gave me the senior adult discount without ever asking if I qualified. Note, I don’t qualify yet, but I was glad to save a couple of bucks.

Limiting mindsets are keeping you from your zone of genius. Many people are competent; some are excellent. Few, however, make it to their Zone of Genius (as described by Gay Hendricks in The Big Leap). As a coach, I usually encounter people who are excellent at a lot of things, but they know something is still missing. They don’t know how to turn their ideas into products or organize their content for their book. They aren’t sure how to set up an effective funnel to move people from spectator to customer. I get to meet the ones who want to overcome those obstacles and step into their zone of genius. But there are countless others who think they can figure it out on their own. They can’t. They are stuck.

Help Is Available

You need a coach to help you see things you can’t see and help you do things you don’t think you can do. I’ve had people tell me they could never create an online course. Today, however, they have courses up and running on their websites. People who said they can’t write are now proficient bloggers who are working on ebooks and articles. Skeptics turn into evangelists when they get the help they need.

Maybe you are one of those people who thinks you don’t need a coach. You’re probably right. Your life is hitting on all cylinders, your business is thriving, and you have all the time you need to produce blog posts, podcasts, books, courses, and be interviewed seventy-four times each week. You have a giant S on your chest, change clothes in a phone booth (good luck finding one), and fly from place to place by raising your arms to the sky. You are the subject of comic books and movies. Congratulations!

For the rest of us who struggle to get everything done and realize we have a lot of learning to do, we should consider reaching out to a coach who can help us get there. Sure, it will cost money, but the investment will pay off today and for years to come.
