Make a SPLASH with Your Message

All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure. | Mark Twain

People have different definitions of success. The dictionary defines it as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. So, it should come as no surprise that we all mean something different when we discuss the topic. As a content strategist, I work with people to create a personalized plan that accomplished their goals. In other words, I help people use their content to achieve success.

Because I am an avid learner, I read a lot of articles and books in an effort to shore up my weaknesses and improve my strengths. I know those things are outside comfort zones and I know how I can help people. From Mark Twain’s perspective, I have the two basic ingredients for success—ignorance and confidence.

Hopefully, you are much the same. I hope you have identified your strengths and have a plan to achieve success. For those of you who would like a little help, here is my six-step process for achieving success. I’ll use the word SPLASH to make it easy to remember.

Simplify Your Focus

Just because we are complex people doesn’t mean we have to make everything complex. Your focus—for the purpose of creating a plan—should be simple. Make sure you can state it in one sentence with very few commas. Try keeping it to ten words, if possible. Here’s mine: I create educational tools and resources that are efficient, effective, and engaging.

Personalize the Pain

Your plan should solve a real person’s problem or ease a pain. If you can’t personalize your audience, your idea is too broad. Go back and narrow your focus until you can connect with a person you know. I know there are people who need help creating content. I can name names, but I won’t.

Legitimize Your Authority

Why are you a reliable authority on this topic? You don’t need an advanced degree or a long list of accolades. You simply need to explain how you gained the knowledge you have and why this topic interests you. I’ve worked with some great people—Michael Hyatt, Dan Miller, Ray Edwards, and so forth. I’ve been in this world for a long time.

Address the Benefits

Why would anyone want to work with me? Try out my new interactive tool to help you determine the cost of hiring someone to create content for you. People who work with me can learn how to create their own courses and content and, ultimately, save a ton of money. That’s just one of the benefits.

Sequence Your Solutions

Not everyone needs the same solution. Therefore, you should arrange your offerings in such a way as to walk people from your free solutions to your most expensive ones. I use The Content Matrix© to help clients create a sequential family of products that keeps people engaged for a long time. I can help you apply the principles of The Content Matrix to your message.

How-To Is a Start

If you can show people how to do something, they will respond. Whether it’s a webinar on how to use your favorite software or a video showing people how to brew great coffee, how-to guides and videos are some of the most popular products out today. You don’t have to be fancy; a simple tip sheet will do.

So, there you have it. You can now SPLASH your way to success. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Recognize your ignorance, proceed with confidence, and success will be possible. It worked pretty well for Samuel Clemens. It will work for you, too.
